The Heart Of A Leader
Many people define leadership as being in charge of a group or an organization. In both of my years of leadership class, I have learned that there is so much more to leadership than just being in charge. Through my first year, not only had I learned so much about myself, others, and the different qualities of leadership, but there was also a passion that began to burn in me. For me it wasn’t necessarily the guidebook that taught me about my leadership qualities, it was the pe

Genuine All Star
I’m spending the weekend at the CHASCA Allstate Games at Adams State University in Alamosa, Colorado. Athletes from the sports of wrestling, cross country, football, volleyball, baseball, softball, spirt, girls and boys basketball are gathered here to celebrate one thing. Simply being awesome. They were nominated by coaches in their region to represent their sport. It is the best of the best, playing together in a mixed classification competition. I follow students and s

The Class of 2017 celebrates the dawning of a new age in their lives. Tomorrow morning, they will wake up as graduates of North Park High School. They will face the next chapter called The University Of Life. Some will go on to attend college and technical training. Others will jump into the work force and begin their first careers. Regardless what they do, this group of young people has a common bond that makes them unique. There is a special thing about the comraderie

Senior Project Builds A Passion for Success
“Hey I’ve got great news! I just caught a fish on the pole I built for my Senior project!” The excitement this young man had in his voice wasn’t to call and brag by no means. He doesn’t know what it means to brag; he’s the humblest soul around. He called me to share his pride in a personal accomplishment gained from the daunting task of organizing a Senior Project for his high school English class. Noel Pizana is one of 8 high school students that has spent the last 9 mont

Tough Conditions Yield Tough Athletes
North Park is an amazing place that is good for many things like hunting and fishing, hiking, enjoying majestic views, getting snowed in for weeks at a time, discovering what minus 60 degrees feels like in your lungs; I could go on and on. One thing North Park isn’t so great for is practicing track and field. Between the weather, and the lack of resources we have, it’s kind of amazing we even have a program. Our “track” is actually too short and made of dirt and we share it w

The Blue & Gold Traveling Toilet
It was another cold, snowy day but the sun was shining when new Principal, Jack Daly came out of his house and was greeted with a Blue and Gold toilet appliqued with yellow paw prints. The mysteriously appearing commode, decorated in full school spirit, apparently was planted by anonymous parents of the Junior Class in an effort to raise money to host a After-Prom Party. The Daly family’s response, “It looked great in the snow and brightened things up a bit. There’s potent

Hard Work Pays Off
I was born in Gunnison, CO, lived in New Mexico for a year or so then moved here when I turned two and have grown up here in Walden. I would spend a few weeks every summer in Gunnison, but I'm always right back to Walden. When I was younger my role for the ranch was whatever chores my dad gave me. In the spring, during calving I would go tagging with him. Whenever a baby (calf) needed to be pulled I always wanted to go and watch and help. We would move pairs whether it was n

Music Rooted In Beef Country
Students at North Park High are a talented group of individuals from the field to the classroom. A new guitar class has expanded their opportunities through music education in the school district. Cowgirls On The Court = Coaching Legend
"Ranch girls expected to be pushed. They were the only players whose parents asked me NOT to play them so much."
